Gutter Solutions Built Around Your Home’s Roofing System

Your gutter system plays a bigger role than simply moving water away from your house. When properly designed and installed, it protects your fascia, siding, foundation, landscaping, and the overall performance of your roofing system.

At Mattsson Roofing, we approach gutters the same way we approach every roofing component: by understanding how the system is working today, identifying underlying issues, and recommending the solution that makes sense for the home. Whether you need seamless gutter replacement, a Yankee gutter upgrade, or protection added to an existing system, our goal is to provide a solution built for long-term performance.

Types of Gutters We Install

Different homes require different gutter solutions. The right system depends on several factors, including your roof pitch, drainage areas, fascia condition, architectural style, and whether you are replacing an outdated system or upgrading an existing one.

Seamless Gutters

Each gutter run is custom-cut on-site to match your home’s dimensions. With fewer seams, these systems are less likely to leak and require less maintenance than sectional systems.

5” & 6” K-Style Gutters

This popular profile fits neatly against your fascia boards and is available in multiple colors. Designed for optimal water volume handling and long-term aesthetics.

Copper Gutters & Half Round Gutters

Perfect for historic homes or upscale curb appeal, copper gutters and half-round shapes offer beauty, longevity, and a timeless finish that develops a natural patina over time.

Is a Seamless Gutter System Right for Your Home?

Seamless gutters are one of the most common upgrades for homeowners replacing older gutter systems. Unlike sectional gutters, which are assembled from multiple pieces, seamless gutters are formed in continuous runs with fewer joints where leaks can develop.

For most Bergen County homes, seamless aluminum gutters provide a practical balance of durability, appearance, and long-term performance. Aluminum handles seasonal temperature changes and freeze-thaw cycles well, requires minimal maintenance, and is available in a variety of colors to complement your home's exterior.

Copper gutters are another option, especially for older homes, historic properties, or homeowners looking for a specific architectural look. Copper can be fabricated as a seamless system and offers exceptional longevity while developing a natural patina over time.

What Is a Yankee Gutter and When Does It Need to Be Replaced?

Yankee gutters, also called built-in or integral gutters, are different from standard exterior gutter systems. Instead of hanging from the fascia, they are built directly into the roofline and are commonly found on older Colonial and Victorian-style homes throughout Bergen County.

The challenge with aging Yankee gutters is often not the visible gutter itself, but what is happening underneath. Over time, liners can deteriorate, allowing water to reach the wood structure behind the roofline. That moisture can lead to fascia damage, soffit deterioration, and even damage deeper into the home's framing before obvious signs appear.

When evaluating a Yankee gutter system, we look beyond the surface condition. The right solution may involve restoring the existing system, improving components, or transitioning to an external seamless gutter system mounted to the fascia. For homes with historic details or unique architecture, copper gutters may provide a way to improve performance while maintaining the character of the property.

Why You Should Replace Your Gutters When You Get a New Roof

When installing a new roof, it’s the perfect time to upgrade your gutters. Here’s why:

Size Adjustments

We always include a drip edge when installing a new roof, which slightly extends the shingle overhang. If a roofer keeps your existing gutters, they may no longer be long enough to capture runoff effectively under your new roofing system.

Seal Integrity

During a roof replacement, your gutter system is often disturbed. Endcap seals can break, and even if resealed, they won’t be as effective as a fresh installation.

Improved Performance

Modern gutter systems are more efficient, offering better protection for your home. Adding gutter covers can further reduce maintenance and keep your system running smoothly.

Gutter Protection Systems - How Do They Reduce Maintenance?

Gutter protection helps reduce the amount of debris that enters the gutter channel, but the right system still needs to match the home and surrounding environment.

Mattsson Roofing installs gutter protection options including Gutter Helmet and Hydro-Flo Covers. These systems are designed to allow water into the gutter while reducing buildup from leaves, seed matter, and other debris.

Gutter Helmets use a curved surface that allows water to follow the edge and enter the gutter while debris moves away. Hydro-Flo Covers use a similar approach and can be a good fit for different roof configurations.

A properly installed protection system can help reduce maintenance, limit standing water, and lower the risk of issues caused by clogged gutters. It can also help reduce problems associated with winter conditions, including ice buildup at the roof edge.

All gutter protection installations are backed by manufacturer and workmanship warranties.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gutter Installation and Protection in Bergen County

Age, recurring leaks, visible fascia damage, sagging sections, and failed fasteners are all signs that replacement may make more sense than continued repairs. A gutter system that requires repeated patching often indicates a larger issue with the installation, materials, or supporting structure.

Winter gutter installation requires additional planning because temperatures, frozen ground, and material conditions can affect the installation process. Work may be possible depending on weather conditions, but each project needs to be evaluated individually.

Gutter screens allow water through a mesh surface but can still allow smaller debris to collect. Helmet-style systems use water flow and surface tension to move debris away while directing water into the gutter.

Mattsson Roofing installs Gutter Helmet systems because they provide a different approach than traditional screen-style protection.

Ice dams are usually caused by heat escaping through the roof, melting snow above, and refreezing near colder roof edges. While clogged gutters can make the problem worse, the underlying cause is often related to insulation, ventilation, and overall roof performance.

Addressing the gutter system alone may not solve recurring ice dam problems if the roofing system has other issues contributing to the condition.

Yes. Yankee gutter is a regional term for a built-in or integral gutter system. These gutters are incorporated into the roof structure instead of being installed externally along the fascia.

They are common on older homes throughout Bergen County and require a more detailed evaluation because the surrounding wood structure can be affected when failures occur.

Yes. Older homes often require a different approach because of their construction methods, architectural details, and existing gutter systems.

Mattsson Roofing evaluates conditions such as Yankee gutters, aging fascia, roofline design, and drainage needs before recommending the right solution. For some homes, materials like copper may provide the right balance of performance and appearance.

Our Reviews

I hired Mattsson to do repairs around my chimney and vent pipe. A different contractor did a less than stellar job sealing these areas, and they had started letting in some water. These company did a very thorough inspection and quote. The crew was very professional and communicated well throughout the repair process. The repairs look neat and well done. Would recommend.

Excellent job! Eric was so clear and easily communicated with us pricing and the steps/materials required to remove our damaged roof and add a new roof. Mattsson was the only roofer that went up on our roof to inspect before giving us his quote- Eric's attention to detail really made the difference. His team was extremely efficient and very careful not to damage our flowers/landscaping. The whole process to replace the roof and gutters took about 3 days- amazing considering the incredible improvement to the look of our home. We Highly recommend Mattsson

Exceptional service, very professional. They replaced a skylight for us on a steep, high roof. Many other roofers didn’t want to do the job or wanted to charge an exorbitant price. Mattson got it done in 1.5 days at a reasonable cost. They made an extra effort to provide drone pictures of the in-progress and finished work, clean up any debris and nails (with a magnet), and resolved any issues quickly and efficiently.
