How Much Does a Roof Cost in Bergen & Passaic County?

Most homeowners who try to research roofing costs on their own end up with more questions than answers. Ranges are all over the place, and it's nearly impossible to know which numbers apply to a home like yours. After years of working across New Jersey, we know that confusing quotes and vague estimates are one of the biggest pain points in the roofing process.

That's exactly why we believe in laying it all out upfront. Real numbers from real local projects, presented clearly so you can plan ahead and know what to expect before we ever show up at your door. At Mattsson Roofing, we believe that kind of clarity is what every homeowner deserves from the start.

When Repair Makes Sense & What It’ll Cost You

For many roofs, a repair is all it takes to get things back in order. Between January 2023 and January 2026, we managed 340 repair projects across the area.

Here's what homeowners actually paid:

  • Average Cost: $3,432

  • Typical Bracket: $194 - $6,671

  • Largest Repair on Record: $24,579

There's a lot of variation in what a repair can involve, and the pricing reflects that. Breaking it down by repair type can make the numbers a lot easier to digest.

Here are a few common examples to give you a better sense of where your situation might fall:

  • Shingle Patch Repairs: $1,000 - $5,000

  • Complex Shingle Repairs: $2,500 - $7,500+

  • Chimney Flashing Replacement: $2,500 - $5,000

One thing worth keeping in mind: a repair fixes the symptom but doesn't always address the source. If your roof has underlying ventilation problems or recurring water damage, a repair might buy you some time, but it’s not a permanent solution. We'll always be candid with you about what we find and what we recommend.

The True Value of Replacement

Sometimes a repair just isn't enough, and a replacement is the smarter long-term move. A new roof is a meaningful investment, but it also means years of reliable protection, boosted energy efficiency, and one less thing to worry about down the road.

These numbers come straight from 214 replacement projects completed between January 2023 and January 2026:

  • Average Cost: $23,925

  • Typical Bracket: $12,117 - $35,734

  • Largest Replacement on Record: $82,000

A full replacement includes removing your old roof, repairing or replacing any damaged decking, and installing your new system, along with any additional features like skylights, gutters, or updated ventilation. The price shifts depending on the overall size and layout of your roof, the materials you select, and any upgrades you want included.

What’s Behind Your Roof Quote

To understand your quote, it helps to know what goes into building one. These are the main factors that move the number up or down:

Size & Layout

More square footage, valleys, dormers, and skylights all mean more materials and more time on the job.

Pitch

Steeper roofs are harder and slower to work on without risk, which increases labor costs.

Materials

Asphalt shingles sit at the more affordable end of the spectrum, while metal, tile, or slate can increase the price.

Accessibility

Multi-story homes or tricky access points require extra planning and effort to work safely.

Existing Conditions

Rotted wood, mold, or other hidden damage can be unearthed once work begins and may affect your final total.

Knowing these factors won't give you an exact number, but they'll help you understand why one home might cost twice as much as another that looks similar from the street. It also makes for a much more productive conversation when we sit down together.

Dealing with Hidden Costs

Sometimes, once the work begins, we find something that wasn't visible during the initial inspection. When that happens, everything stops. We'll document the issue, walk you through your options, and wait for your go-ahead before taking any further action. Nothing moves forward without your approval, period.

If the final number ends up higher than expected, we also offer flexible financing plans to help make the project more manageable. Whatever your situation, we'll work with you to find a plan that fits your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

That depends largely on the material. Asphalt shingles typically last 20 to 25 years, while premium options like metal or slate can last significantly longer with proper maintenance.

It depends on the cause of the damage. Storm damage, falling debris, and certain other sudden events are often covered, while normal wear and tear typically isn't.

In most cases, you can remain in your home while we replace your roof. Our team works efficiently to minimize disruption, but there will be some noise and activity during the process. If you have pets or young children, you may want to take extra precautions.

Our Reviews

I hired Mattsson to do repairs around my chimney and vent pipe. A different contractor did a less than stellar job sealing these areas, and they had started letting in some water. These company did a very thorough inspection and quote. The crew was very professional and communicated well throughout the repair process. The repairs look neat and well done. Would recommend.

Excellent job! Eric was so clear and easily communicated with us pricing and the steps/materials required to remove our damaged roof and add a new roof. Mattsson was the only roofer that went up on our roof to inspect before giving us his quote- Eric's attention to detail really made the difference. His team was extremely efficient and very careful not to damage our flowers/landscaping. The whole process to replace the roof and gutters took about 3 days- amazing considering the incredible improvement to the look of our home. We Highly recommend Mattsson

Exceptional service, very professional. They replaced a skylight for us on a steep, high roof. Many other roofers didn’t want to do the job or wanted to charge an exorbitant price. Mattson got it done in 1.5 days at a reasonable cost. They made an extra effort to provide drone pictures of the in-progress and finished work, clean up any debris and nails (with a magnet), and resolved any issues quickly and efficiently.
