Protecting Your Home with Targeted, Long-Lasting Repairs

Mattsson Roofing diagnoses roof leaks at the source and delivers permanent repairs, not surface patches, across Bergen, Passaic, and Essex Counties. As a Certified Atlas Roofing Contractor with 335+ verified 5-star Google reviews, we inspect, document, and repair with the same standards we apply to full replacements.

A small leak or damaged shingle can quickly turn into a major problem if not addressed properly. Mattsson Roofing approaches every repair with a thorough inspection, a documented diagnosis, and a permanent solution aimed at the underlying cause.

Homeowners across Bergen, Passaic, and Essex Counties receive a clear explanation of what failed, why it failed, and exactly what we're doing to fix it.

What Does Roof Repair Actually Include?

Targeted roof repair addresses the part of your roof that’s failing: a deteriorated pipe boot, a compromised flashing joint at a chimney or skylight, a section of wind-lifted shingles, or a compromised valley where two roof planes meet. Our goal is to fix the underlying problem rather than apply temporary patches. When you request an estimate, you receive a detailed inspection and a clear explanation of the work required before any scheduling occurs.

What Kinds of Roof Repairs Does Mattsson Handle?

We address the most frequent failure points on Northern New Jersey residential roofs:

  • Leak Diagnosis and Permanent Repair: Water rarely enters where it appears. We trace water to its source and repair the underlying cause rather than treating only the visible symptoms.

  • Shingle Replacement: Damaged or missing shingles are replaced using both weather protection and curb appeal.

  • Flashing and Vent Boot Restoration: Deteriorated flashing at chimneys, skylights, and roof penetrations is replaced. Cracked rubber vent boots are swapped out entirely rather than patched with sealant.

  • Velux Skylight Replacement: When a skylight is leaking, resealing the flashing or patching the seal is a temporary fix. Mattsson Roofing removes the old unit and installs a new Velux skylight, properly integrated with the roofing system. As a Certified Velux Skylight Installer, we have the manufacturer training to do this correctly. Read more about skylight replacement.

  • Storm Damage Repairs: Wind, ice, and debris damage is assessed with a full roof inspection, documented, and repaired to restore the system rather than just the visible surface.

  • Emergency Roof Tarping: When water is actively entering the building, we install heavy-duty temporary protection over the compromised area while permanent repairs are scheduled.

  • Ventilation Corrections: A repair inspection sometimes reveals that the root cause is a ventilation imbalance driving moisture into the decking or accelerating shingle wear. When that's the finding, we address ventilation as part of the repair scope rather than treating only the surface damage.

For storm damage situations, scheduling an estimate is the first useful step. Our case study on emergency roof tarping in Wyckoff, NJ, shows how we handle active damage.

Why Does Finding the Source of a Roof Leak Matter?

A roof leak rarely forms in your home at the point where water enters your roofing system. Moisture travels along rafters, underlayment, and decking before showing up as a ceiling stain, often several feet from the true entry point. Our systematic approach traces water to its origin, ensuring repairs target the real problem. Our post on how to trace and fix roof leaks walks through the diagnostic process in detail.

What Can Cause Roof Damage on Bergen County Homes?

Homes throughout Bergen, Passaic, and Essex Counties experience seasonal weather conditions that can accelerate roof deterioration and create leaks:

Aging Flashing Systems

Many older Bergen County homes have original flashing that has been repeatedly sealed over rather than replaced. Each layer of sealant is a temporary fix on a failing substrate. Eventually the flashing itself needs to come out.

Ice Dams

Inadequate attic ventilation allows heat to accumulate beneath the roof deck, melting snow on the upper slope. That meltwater runs toward the eaves, refreezes, and backs water up under the shingles, causing damage that outlasts the storm.

Wind-Lifted Shingles

Storm winds work under shingle edges and tabs, breaking the adhesive seal and exposing the underlayment beneath, or the decking itself if the underlayment has deteriorated. Atlas shingles are rated for wind resistance, but age and prior installation quality affect how well any shingle holds.

Granule Loss and Shingle Age

As asphalt shingles age, they shed the granules that shed water and block UV exposure. A roof losing granules is losing its primary defense against both moisture and heat degradation.

Deteriorated Vent boots

The rubber collars that seal plumbing vent pipes eventually break down from years of UV exposure and weathering. As the rubber cracks and separates, water can enter directly around the pipe penetration. Vent boot failures are one of the most common causes of roof leaks and one of the most frequently overlooked roofing issues on Northern New Jersey homes.

Is Storm Damage Always Visible From the Ground?

Not all roof damage is visible from the ground. Ridge lines, roof edges, and debris punctures are difficult to assess without a thorough roof inspection. Mattsson Roofing gets on the roof, photographs findings, and delivers a complete documented picture of the roof condition before recommending any repair scope.

What Materials Does Mattsson Use for Roof Repairs?

The materials used for a roof repair depend on the type of roof, the source of the problem, and the condition of the existing roofing system. Our goal is to address the root cause of the issue while maintaining the appearance and performance of the roof whenever possible.

For asphalt shingle repairs, we frequently use Atlas products because their wide range of shingle styles helps us achieve a closer match on many Northern New Jersey homes. Depending on the repair, we may also replace pipe flashings, chimney flashing, roof vents, underlayment, or damaged roof decking.

Every repair begins with an inspection to determine the appropriate materials and the best long-term solution for the roof.

Visit our Atlas shingles page for more product details.

What Does Roof Repair Cost in Bergen County, NJ?

Roof repair costs depend on the scope of damage, the materials involved, and whether secondary components like underlayment or decking need to be addressed alongside the primary repair. A failed vent boot is a focused, single-component repair. Storm damage affecting shingles, flashing, and decking across multiple sections is a different scope entirely. The difference in cost reflects the difference in work.

We offer thorough estimates with no hidden fees. Our detailed estimate process tells you exactly what work is covered before scheduling. We also offer financing options to help make your roof repairs more affordable. See our roof pricing page for more details on the factors that influence roof repair costs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Roof Repair in New Jersey

You won't know until someone thoroughly inspects the roof. Repair makes sense when damage is localized and the surrounding system is structurally sound. Replacement becomes appropriate when damage is widespread or the roof has reached the end of its lifespan. We assess both possibilities and give you a straight answer.

In many cases, yes. A targeted repair at a failed flashing joint, cracked vent boot, or damaged shingle section can fully resolve a leak without touching the rest of the roof. The determining factors are the extent of damage and the overall system condition. If the rest of the roof is sound, repair is often the more practical choice.

If water is actively entering your home, we recommend contacting us as soon as possible. Response times depend on weather conditions, crew availability, and the nature of the problem, but active leaks are prioritized whenever possible.

In some situations, emergency tarping may be the best short-term solution to help reduce additional water intrusion until permanent repairs can be completed. The appropriate next step depends on the source of the leak, the extent of the damage, and current site conditions.

Homeowner's insurance may cover roof repairs when the damage is caused by a covered event, such as wind, hail, or a fallen tree. Repairs related to aging materials, normal wear and tear, or deferred maintenance are generally not covered.

Since coverage varies by policy, homeowners should contact their insurance provider directly and ask: "Based on the cause of the damage, would this type of roof repair be covered under my policy?" They should also ask about deductibles, claim requirements, and any documentation the insurance company may need before making a coverage determination.

Delaying repairs for storm damage expands the scope of repairs. Once the roof system is compromised, water infiltration continues with each rain event, and moisture in decking or attic space creates additional problems. In Bergen County, where major storm events can occur frequently, scheduling inspection soon after damage keeps repairs manageable.

Emergency roof tarping is a temporary measure used to protect a home after a roof has been damaged and water is actively entering the building. A heavy-duty tarp is securely installed over the affected area to help reduce additional water intrusion until permanent repairs can be completed.

Emergency tarping is commonly used after storms, fallen tree impacts, missing shingles, or other sudden roof failures. While a tarp can help protect the interior of the home and limit further damage, it is not a permanent repair and should be followed by a thorough inspection and long-term solution.

If you're unsure whether emergency tarping is appropriate for your situation, a roof inspection can help determine the best next step.

Our Reviews

I hired Mattsson to do repairs around my chimney and vent pipe. A different contractor did a less than stellar job sealing these areas, and they had started letting in some water. These company did a very thorough inspection and quote. The crew was very professional and communicated well throughout the repair process. The repairs look neat and well done. Would recommend.

Excellent job! Eric was so clear and easily communicated with us pricing and the steps/materials required to remove our damaged roof and add a new roof. Mattsson was the only roofer that went up on our roof to inspect before giving us his quote- Eric's attention to detail really made the difference. His team was extremely efficient and very careful not to damage our flowers/landscaping. The whole process to replace the roof and gutters took about 3 days- amazing considering the incredible improvement to the look of our home. We Highly recommend Mattsson

Exceptional service, very professional. They replaced a skylight for us on a steep, high roof. Many other roofers didn’t want to do the job or wanted to charge an exorbitant price. Mattson got it done in 1.5 days at a reasonable cost. They made an extra effort to provide drone pictures of the in-progress and finished work, clean up any debris and nails (with a magnet), and resolved any issues quickly and efficiently.
