Why You Should Upgrade Your Gutter System When Installing a New Roof

Insights from Craig Buurman, Production Manager at Mattsson Roofing

When you invest in a new roof, upgrading your gutter system might not be the first thing on your mind. However, as Craig Buurman, Production Manager at Mattsson Roofing, explains, there are a couple of important reasons why you should consider changing your gutters alongside your new roof installation.

1. Proper Fit for Your New Roof

One of the most common issues we see is that existing gutter systems are often not long enough for your new roof. When we install a new roof, we also install a drip edge along the rake side of your home to direct water properly. This drip edge, combined with shingle overhang, often makes your old gutters too short. If we reinstall your old gutter system, it can be too short on both sides, leading to water running off the roof and hitting the ground. You might notice water dripping down and assume your gutters are leaking, but in reality, they’re just not long enough to handle the runoff from your new roof.

2. Risk of Breaking Seals

Another reason to consider upgrading your gutters is the potential damage to your existing system during roof installation. When we remove and reinstall old gutters, there’s a chance of breaking the seals on the end caps. Once these seals are broken, they can start leaking over time.

If your home has a lot of ins and outs along the roofline—what we call "miters"—you’re even more at risk of seal breakage. While it’s possible to reseal them, it’s hard to achieve the same tight seal they had when they were first installed. Over time, this can lead to leaking gutters and water damage around your home’s foundation.

3. Opportunity for Improvement

Upgrading your gutters when you get a new roof is also a chance to make improvements to your gutter system. While we're installing your roof, we can recommend modern gutter solutions, such as larger gutters to handle more water, gutter guards to keep debris out and reduce the need for maintenance, or gutter hangers for improved support and stability. These upgrades can help protect your home and ensure that your gutters work efficiently for years to come.
